Analysis of experimental data on signals returning from midlatitude spread-F irregularities indicates a connection between these irregularities and nighttime travelling ionospheric disturbances. Statistical investigation of the spread-F occurrence at a number of midlatitude stations with same latitudes, but over a range of longitudes, shows an East-West movement of spread-F irregularities when the occurrence of these stations is considered relative to days of enhanced occurrence in a particular station. The experimental results indicate that the appearance of midlatitude spread-F ionograms is due to specular reflections from large-scale structures which can be considered as nighttime travelling ionospheric disturbances.
