Evidence, chiefly in the form of intermediate band and H beta photometry of cluster stars, is gathered to show that the currently adopted zero-age main sequence for early stars is probably of incorrect slope because of evolutionary effects in the clusters used to construct it. Presently available evidence suggests that star formation may be bimodal with many young star-producing regions containing only stars that will be brighter than -1 mag when they reach main sequence (mode B), and other regions, mostly connected with heavy obscuration and dust clouds, containing only stars fainter than 0 mag when they reach main sequence (mode A). Both modes have apparently operated in producing the stars in clusters such as the Pleiades and NGC 2264.
