By combining data from compressional and vibrational spectral studies, both the zero-pressure isothermal bulk modulus (BT,0) and its first pressure derivative (B'T,0) can be directly and independently calculated for a material without employing an empirical equation of state. On the basis of the observed behavior of Raman frequencies as a function of pressure and volume, a series of equations of state are derived, the simplest being the Murnaghan equation of state. These equations of state are consistent not only with the data from compressional studies but also with those of spectral studies. Experimental data for forsterite and stishovite are employed as an illustration.
