The impulsive penetration theory proposed by Lemaire and Roth (1978) for the penetration of solar wind plasma elements into the magnetosphere is reviewed, emphasizing the ways in which the entry mechanism in this theory differs from the ideal MHD entry mechanism proposed by Schindler (1979) and from that proposed by Heikkila (1982). Special consideration is given to the criticism offered by Owen and Cowley (1991) Heikkila's penetration mechanism. It is argued here that, although the conclusions reached by Owen and Cowley (with regard to the fallacy of Heikkila's argument claiming that the effects of induced electric fields are the primary cause for impulsive penetration) are correct, they do not demonstrate that real plasmoids can not penetrate impulsively into closed geomagnetic field lines.
