Spectroscopic data in the spectral range λλ4000-6800 Å are presented for a "white nebulosity" located about 40' north of Carinae and characterized by low density and low excitation. The observations were performed with the Image Dissector Scanner (I.D.S.) at the cassegrain focus of the European Southern Observatory (E.S.0.) 3.60 m telescope at La Silla Chile, on February 25, 1980. The electron temperature, electron density and relative ionic abundances for various species are derived. The Te [O III] is rather higher than Te [N II] which probably indicates that we are observing radiation emitted from several regions along the line of sight, clearly different in physical characteristics. From the [O III]/Hβ ratio, smaller than unity for the two regions of the filament separated by 40 arc sec it is suggested that the exciting star, if any, responsible for the ionization of this part of the nebula, could have an effective temperature of about 26 600 K, corresponding to a spectral type (BO-B1) rather earlier than the nearby bright star 50 92 964 (V = 5.37, B3 Ia) visible in the southern side of the nebulosity. It is not excluded that the observed radiation is partly generated by a shock-heated medium.
