The development of an analytical model of the physical processes which occur during the entry of a small compact metallic meteor into the earth's atmosphere is discussed. Numerical results are presented for the heating, ablation and radiation of 1.0 mm-diameter artificial meteors of pure iron and pure nickel launched into the atmosphere at an altitude of 80 km with 12 km/sec velocities. These results are qualitatively compared with experimental spectroscopic data taken during the Trailblazer artificial meteor program and with classical compact meteor theory. Qualitative agreement is demonstrated and an explanation of often-observed radiation peaks in natural and artificial meteor trails is presented.
