The optical circuitry of the Mars-5 CO2 altimeter is presented and its operation is described. It is based on the fact that intensity of the molecular absorption bands depends on the quantity of absorbing matter along the light beam path. The instrument employs seven interchangeable interference filters and seven independent amplification channels for each filter output. An automatic gain regulating system is provided to ensure normal operation of the photometer. Pressure and elevation curve distributions are presented and are shown to coincide in basic details.
