Trace element geochemical studies of belemnite rostra from the Jurassic of southern Germany (Veizer, 1974) showed that the rostra were subjected to ~10% post-depositional exchange with their enclosing rocks. This, together with the discrepancy between paleoclimatic and oxygen isotope paleotemperature curves (Fritz, 1965) indicated that the latter might alternatively reflect the degree of post-depositional alteration and/or brackish influences. The integration of the above trace element studies with the presently reported stable isotope data supports these contentions. This method can be therefore utilized for selection of the ``least altered'' specimen in a given population. In general the presence of >~ 70-100 ppm of Mn in belemnite rostra is indicative of a post-depositional elemental and isotopic exchange.
