By means of certain specific problems that have a clear physical interpretation, some nonlinear one-dimensional longitudinal motions of an elastic-granular medium in a gravity field are investigated. The solutions obtained differ essentially from similar solutions of the corresponding linear problem. A problem containing a discontinuity of the medium (chipping-off) is investigated.
