Experimental seismic activations in situ undertaken during recent years reveal the character of three different types of nonlinear effect. These are: wave velocity temporal changes due to temporal changes of the stress field; seismic wave interactions during comparatively small deformations, ɛ1 × ɛ2 ~ 10-12 strong influence of the slow changes of the stress field and seismic vibrations on the seismic activity of the real geological media, i.e. parameters of the seismic emission process.
New opportunities for detailed investigation of nonlinear effects are provided by the use of seismic vibrators that generate sinusoidal signals, as well as by highly sensitive narrow frequency band recording channels. These two tools open up broad new possibilities for investigation of nonlinear effects in a large variety of geological conditions and wave propagation situations.
These results change our opinion that nonlinear effects play a remarkable role only for strong wave propagation. Even very weak but detectable nonlinear effects can be used for purposes of investigating media structure and geodynamical processes, for seismic prospecting and for the monitoring of oil and gas exploration.
