Determinations of the total atmospheric absorption at 22.2 GHz, caused almost entirely by water vapor, are obtained from measurements of atmospheric emission made regularly near Sao Paulo, Brazil, since 1972. The results indicate large seasonal, daily, and hourly ranges in zenith attenuation, which is observed to change by up to a factor of two in one day and up to 50 per cent in several hours. The measurement uncertainties are found to be much smaller than any of the observed variations. The absorption is shown not to have a sufficiently precise correlation with the dew point temperature to allow its prediction to be made from that temperature.
