High resolution observations of a weak absorption feature in the Io spectrum, obtained in 1975-1976 indicate that, if this feature is indicative of the presence of a new class of material, it may be the only diagnostic feature in Io's near-IR spectrum that can be distinguished by terrestrial telescopes. It appears unlikely that the absorber is a gas, or that gaseous CO2 contributes to the line shape.
