The first part of this article gives a survey of cosmology to the present day, and then puts two radically diverging views on what has been achieved. The second part explores a middle way between these divergent views: a positive but critical approach, looking in turn at issues arising in observations, geometry, physics, and finally at the foundational (philosophical) issues that necessarily arise.
