A computer code is discussed which was developed to identify absorption redshift systems in quasar spectra. The code searches for candidate redshift systems, uses a coherent set of atomic physics and ionization equilibrium criteria to accept or reject each candidate, and generates and analyzes about 500 random spectra used to determine the probability that an accepted system identified in a real spectrum is due to chance. The spectra of 8 quasars are reexamined; 15 systems appear to be well established and 9 more are suggested as possible. The results indicate that the total number of well established redshifts is substantially smaller than previously thought. The distribution of absorption redshifts in well established Class II systems is found to be consistent with the statistical predictions of the cosmological hypothesis for both steady-state and Friedmann cosmologies. Evidence is discussed for the presence of lines arising from excited fine-structure states, neutral species, and molecular hydrogen, and alternative explanations are considered for the large fraction of unidentified lines. It is concluded that a number of these lines are probably members of additional redshift systems.
