Observations of multiple polar cap arcs made by the Sondrestrom incoherent scatter radar and an all-sky, low-light level, filtered video system operated at the radar site are presented. A total of 90 plasma velocity measurements were examined to determine the drifts associated with the arcs. Although there were some identifiable trends in the convective flow, the drifts were highly variable. Measurements obtained by the DMSP F6 satellite passing across the central polar cap from dawn to dusk revealed highly structured electron and ion precipitation, indicating conditions similar to the more turbulent situation when a single transpolar arc is not present. Plasma drifts outside the polar cap arcs were both sunward and antisunward, while within the arcs the drifts were predominantly antisunward.
