Using the approximate expression for different wave refractive indices derived by Sazhin (1987), those values of plasma parameters and wave frequencies for which cold and nonrelativistic plasma approximations are valid were outlined. For R and O waves, the latter approximation is valid when the wave frequency is close to the electron gyrofrequency; for the X wave, it is valid when the wave frequency is close to the doubled electron gyrofrequency.
