A response is given to the criticism by Clube and Jones (1974) of the manner in which the principle of maximum likelihood has been applied by Heck (1972) and Jung (1970) to improve the luminosity estimates of RR Lyrae stars. The main features of Heck and Jung's technique are reviewed with emphasis on the points where it differs from that developed by Clube and Jones (1971). It is shown that for the sample of RR Lyrae variables studied by these two groups, the criticism of Heck and Jung's treatment of random errors affecting proper motions cannot account for the discrepancy between published luminosity estimates obtained by the two methods. It is suggested that the estimators used in the two algorithms be checked by numerical experiments and that Clube and Jones' algorithm departs from a straightforward application of the principle of maximum likelihood.
