Examples are presented which underscore the necessity of performing a physical analysis of solar-activity indices from the viewpoint of their significance for the physics of solar-terrestrial relationships. Particular attention is given to sunspot-formation indices. It is concluded that research of the type proposed will make possible the classification and systematization of solar-activity indices.
