The possibility of developing space-based methods and technologies for the production of energy for consumption on earth is examined emphasizing the use of nuclear fusion and a lunar base. The present global demand for energy and existing sources are reviewed, and the development of nuclear fusion as an alternative energy source is described including the Joint European Torus. Space-based means of energy production are examined, and references are made to the results of the Lunar Energy Enterprise Case Study conducted by NASA in 1989. The requirements of a lunar-based solar-energy plant include the deployment of the required infrastructure and the use of microwave transmitters to send the energy to earth. The availability of helium-3 on the moon suggests that the element can be extracted and processed with lunar facilities. A lunar base developed for the Space Exploration Initiative and satellite power systems are needed for the development of the lunar facility. Emphasis is placed on the advantages of the lunar facility which include the protection of the terrestrial environment from contamination.
