Planetary Magnetospheres: Structure, Planetary Magnetospheres: Magnetic Reconnection
Scientific paper
General structural features and physical mechanisms that are common to all planetary magnetospheres are discussed. The review is divided into two basic classes: (1) magnetospheres of planets with no intrinsic field, and (2) magnetospheres of planets with intrinsic magnetic field. The magnetospheres of Mars and Venus belong to the first category while those of outer planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune belong to the second category. The main characteristics of different planets, fields and particles and plasma waves and instabilities that are related to many phenomena observed by satellite and ground based equipments have been reviewed briefly. The important differences are also pointed out.
