The surprising detection of Galactic radio waves by Karl Jansky in 1931 prompted Grote Reber to search for radio emission from M31 already in 1944. Reber argued correctly that if the Galaxy emitted radio waves, so should M31. Needless to say he was not successful because the sensitivity of his equipment was too low. The first real detection of radio continuum from M31 was made in Jodrell Bank in 1950. Since that time numerous maps of M31 were made at different frequencies with ever improving angular resolution and sensitivity.
