One of the major unsolved problems in supernova research concerns the precise nature of the progenitor systems of Type Ia supernovae. We propose Chandra target-of-opportunity observations of a bright Type Ia supernova in order to better constrain the circumstellar environment of the progenitor and therefore shed light on the nature of the precursor star. The ability of our team to rapidly determine whether a supernova meets our trigger criteria, coupled with the broadband sensitivity and rapid response of Chandra, means that the proposed observations will be more than an order of magnitude more sensitive than any previous ones obtained in any waveband: X-ray, optical or radio.
