The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method extended to include relativistic effects in the Breit-Pauli approximation (MCHF-BP) is tested in the study of the ground configuration of nitrogen-like ions. Fine-structure splittings, E2 and M1 transition rates calculated with the classical (non-relativistic) form of the magnetic transition operator are presented and compared with other theoretical and experimental results up to Zn XXIV. The astrophysical problem of the high-density limit of the intensity ratio I(2D5/2 453/2)/I(2D3/2 - 453/2) is discussed on the basis of these new theoretical data.
