Findings of a third eclipse observed over Canada during February 1979 are presented. Parameters examined include the F-region electron density and the ion line-of-sight drift. Electron density decreased in conjunction with the eclipse. At 300 km an approximate 50 percent decrease was detected near the region of totality, but above 450 km the variations remained small. Unrelated to the eclipse large electric fields developed in the region observed, and north of the 70 deg apex latitude a well-defined trough formed with a sharp equationward edge. The trough appeared to be approaching the radar and its electron and ion temperatures were high. An increase in the rate of the charge transfer reaction in the presence of a large electric field is proposed as an explanation for the trough.
