The propagation and stability of linear wave motions in rotating magnetic systems are examined in relation to processes in planetary interiors. Consideration is given to the propagation characteristics of hydromagnetic inertial gravity waves in an infinite Boussinesq fluid rotating uniformly in the presence of a magnetic field and a zonal flow for the cases of diffusionless systems, and to the stability of diffusive systems with plane layer, and thick and thin spherical shell geometries. The diffusive instabilities are interpreted as waves in order to demonstrate relations between neutral motions in diffusive and diffusionless systems.
