Directional singularities are defined as places where a scalar curvature invariant shows directional behaviour. It is conjectured that directional singularities in solutions of Einstein's equations are artefacts of bad coordinate choices. For the stationary axisymmetric case this result is proved, subject to some technical conditions, by construction of better coordinates. These coordinates can then be used to see where the spacetime needs extension to give the global picture.
