The use of laser mass spectrometry to obtain a quantitative analysis of elements in geological and cosmological objects is considered, and results obtained in the analysis of the international geological standard ZGI-BM and of a sample from the Allende meteorite are compared with accepted values. Specimen preparation procedures and analytical techniques are described; the analysis involves specimen vaporization and ionization by the laser. The experimentally determined values for 33 of 43 elements in the geological standard and for 23 of 52 elements in the meteorite were in agreement with the accepted values, and the causes of the discrepancies are considered.
