An attempt is made to derive more useful indices to describe the peculiarities of the optical region energy distributions of the chemically peculiar stars of the upper main sequence. Those magnitudes of the Balmer and Paschen continua least affected by the peculiarities are used as the basis to define pseudo-continua. Indices are formulated to describe the λ4200, λ5200, and λ6300 broad, continuum absorption features as well as the bright hump near λ3509. The energy distributions of normal main sequence stars are used to derive the behavior of these indices for normal stars as functions of B- V,b- y, B2-G, and B2-V1. A first application of these new indices is made to the HgMn stars. Differences with respect to the normal main sequence stars are found especially for the spectral region where the λ4200 feature is located. This confirms the results of earlier studies. Correlations are found between the new indices for the λ4200 and λ5200 features and some other indices used to describe their behavior. Rectified profiles of the λ5200 region are presented which illustrate the behavior of the HgMn stars as a function of feature strength.
