According to the proposed model of the solar Type V event, the main difference between Type III and Type V bursts involves the evolution of the electron beam. In a Type V event the beam elongates rapidly so that it takes progressively longer times to pass higher plasma levels. Topics discussed include the effects of beam spreading, beam elongation by a velocity spread in a one-dimensional streaming electron distribution, effects of pitch angle scattering, and the lack of polarization. The roles played by Coulomb collisions, nonlinear interactions with Langmuir waves, and wave-particle scattering from various hydromagnetic wave modes are considered. The model is compared with earlier models and with observations.
