Einstein's theory of general relativity predicts that rapidly moving, massive objects, such as orbiting pairs of neutron stars or collapsing cores of supernovae, should produce gravitational waves, i.e., waves of shifting space and time. The National Science Foundation project to construct the Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatory for detecting waves of gravity is described and its operating procedures are discussed. It is expected that the most likely signals will be in the quick collapse of the core of an exploding supernova, a process hidden from view deep within the cataclysm.
