A new statistical criterion defining an upper limit for the angular separation rho of physical double stars is presented as a function of the brightness of their components. This is obtained by considering the star densities for different star brightnesses and for several zones of galactic latitude and calculating the resulting probability of observing an optical pair with component separation not greater than rho. For each pair of component magnitudes m1, m2, this criterion has been formulated in such a way that, with probability more that 95 percent, not a single optical pair will satisfy it.
