Observations of changes in a large, unusual group of sunspots made in 1982 are reported. This group increased in size through the first half of the year until in July it attained its maximum size of over 200 spots covering about 0.4% of the sun's surface. A sudden decrease in the sun's activity caused a reduction in the size of the group. The relative motion of individual spots during the period of the group's maximum size is described. The H-alpha and calcium spectra of the group are summarized, and atmospheric effects during the group's height of activity are briefly reported.
