The results are reported of two years of measurements, performed in Florence, Italy, of the whole ionospheric absorption through a riometer operating at 27.6 MHz. A simple model of the absorbing ionosphere is suggested, according to which a preliminary analysis is carried out of the parameters on which the main variation of the absorption may depend. In particular a first attempt is described of deriving from experimental data the diurnal behaviour of the weighted mean collision frequency. Two examples are also reported of the anomalous behaviour of the absorption during magnetically disturbed periods.
