How do climate changes on Earth and our biological and geological record relate to astronomy... McDonald Observatory post-doctoral researcher Seth Redfield studies the interstellar gas near our Sun called the Local Bubble, which is embedded within the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC). The Local Bubble is an area of lower density and lower temperature vacuum that has protected Earth from the effects of cosmic rays for the past 250,000 years. But over the next 3,000 or so years, the Sun will be approaching the edge of the LIC as it continunes on its orbit of the galactic center. The Sum will move into the so called "Galactic Cloud" that lies toward the center of our galaxy. As we make this transition, the heliosphere may shrink, thus exposing Earth to additional cosmic rays and high energy particles. There is quantitative evidence in the geological record to indicate that Earth has gone through cycles of higher and lower genetic mutations throughout history and we may now be entering a time of higher mutations. Redfield and collaborators are hoping to use new techniques to better map the LIC. NASA is considering a solar exploration craft called Interstellar Probe to better map the boundary of the heliosphere and beyond.
