Mars is a volcanically active planet whose surface has been modified by the action of wind, water and ice. Difference in the surfaces of Mars and the Earth arise from the absence of plate tectonics on Mars and from climate conditions which hinder flow of water across the surface. Huge volcanoes have formed but activity affects broad areas rather than being concentrated in linear zones as on Earth. Water has flowed across the surface, but erosion is trivial. Any relief created by volcanism, deformation or impact largely remains. Instability of liquid water also inhibits transport of weathered products so that recycling of materials within the lithosphere by means of weathering, transportation, sedimentation and burial does not occur.
