We describe an idealized model of CME initiation in active regions based on the mechanism of flux cancellation. This problem is characterized by the coupling of local physics (on the scale of active regions and smaller length scales) with global structures (on the solar radius scale). A model of this kind may be needed to explain the origin of fast CMEs. We will address the relationship between the photospheric shearing flows and flux cancellation mechanism that are used to energize the magnetic field and the characteristics of the pre- and post-eruptive magnetic field.
