Progress in unifying the description of elementary particle interactions is reviewed. The quantum field theories of the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interaction are discussed along with the development of a unified quantum field theory. The results of experiments in nuclear physics are used to illustrate the discussion. The connection of the unified field theory with cosmology is detailed. The defects of the present theory and prospects for its improvement are also examined.
