During and preceding magnetic storms there are large changes in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and the dynamic pressure. These parameters control the entry of solar energetic particles (SEP) into the magnetosphere and their trapping and precipitation. The large southward IMF of the storm main phase is often preceded by large changes in dynamic pressure accompanying the arrival of interplanetary shocks. To study the entry and acceleration processes we performed particle tracing calculations in the electric and magnetic fields from a global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation. We used solar wind and IMF time series measured by upstream spacecraft during magnetic storms to drive the MHD simulations. Particles that penetrate deeply into the inner magnetosphere during the periods of increased dynamic pressure can remain trapped after the dynamic pressure declines.
