The pitch angle distribution of the ring current ions determines the latitude extent of the Storm Time Equatorial Belt (STEB) of energetic particles. The STEB is generated by ENAs produced in the ring current. An isotropic ring current, prevailing during particle injection generates a STEB with maximum intensity off equator, around 35-40 magnetic latitudes. During the storm recovery phase the particle injection ceases, the ring current becomes more symmetric and the pitch angle distribution develops from an isotropic one to a more pancake shaped. This has the effect that the peak of the STEB moves from mid-latitudes toward the equator. Storm time observations of the STEB done by the NOAA satellites which shows this behaviour are presented and related to theory.
