A new empirical geomagnetic field model, in which the tail current system is expanded in a series of basic functions with an arbitrary current distribution in the equatorial plane, including the effects of longitudinal asymmetry, is presented. Each of the basis functions in this spectral expansion is shielded beyond the magnetopause using the appropriate set of harmonic functions. We present the results of the new high- resolution model for different external and magnetospheric conditions, based on the binning of the data from Geotail, Cluster, Polar, and GOES with respect to principal parameters, such as activity indices, solar wind ram pressure, IMF orientation, etc. Special attention is paid to the geometry of electric currents and the magnetic field line structure in the dawn and dusk sectors and the transition region between the quasi-dipole and tail magnetic fields.
