A set of Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry global MHD simulations is performed to study the response of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system to steady southward IMF driving. In particular, the transpolar potential relation to the polar cap area is investigated in attempt to determine whether the two are independent macrovariables describing the behavior of the system. The present simulations are different from the earlier studies using the LFM model in that the inner boundary of the model is moved closer to the earth which is more appropriate for conditions of strong driving. In addition, a broader range of solar wind parameters is explored and comparisons are made with the Hill-Siscoe model, when both models are driven into different regions of the {E,P,σ}-coordinate space, where E and P are the solar wind electric field and ram pressure, and σ is the ionospheric conductance, respectively.
