The nascent new name for our field of research, "Heliophysics," reflects a new direction aimed toward establishing what we do as a basic rather than derivative science, with space as its laboratory. Because a basic science is built upon universal laws extracted from comparative studies of physical processes under a variety of conditions, our new direction will call for advances in coordinated use of disparate data sets by researchers who are unfamiliar with them. With examples from a single researcher's experience as a guest investigator on a number of missions, suggestions for advances are offered. These address aspects of data documentation, data formats, communication with Principal Investigators, and use of virtual observatories.
