Mars crustal magnetism, now well mapped by the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft, provides an extraordinary opportunity to look back in time to the early evolution of the Mars crust. I summarize the present state of knowledge of the crustal magnetic field, and speculate on how the magnetic imprint was originally acquired and how it has been modified by subsequent magmatic activity. The speculation draws upon familiar concepts (plate tectonics, transform faults, volcanism) and leads to a set of outstanding questions, to be addressed in light of future missions.
