The International Heliophysical Year has declared that it targets the elucidation of universal processes found working in a variety of locations and scalings of parameter values in the heliosphere. Science progresses through observation and data analysis to the expression of new knowledge in terms of the universal processes at work. From the generation of solar energy that powers the heliosphere through its transmission, transformation and eventual dissipation, the sequence of events can be explained through quantitative evaluation of such processes. IHY has selected five science themes expressing its focus. These are the evolution and generation of magnetic structures and transients, energy transfer and coupling processes, flows and circulations, boundaries and interfaces and synoptic studies of the 3-D coupled Solar-Planetary Heliospheric System. Many of our case studies involve a sequence of events in the terrestrial environment that originate from an identifiable occurrence on the Sun. When the observations comprehensively cover all stages occurring from the Sun to the Earth, then an opportunity arises to test our implementation of physical processes in models that simulate the solar-terrestrial environment. Information on current understanding of the universal processes involved comes from an examination of model output compared to observations. Without the case studies and modeling, no substantial progress is made. The CAWSES program provides a rich environment for pursuit of the study of universal processes. This presentation will provide an outline with examples on how IHY can collaborate with CAWSES in the study of universal processes.
