The International Heliophysical Year will commence in 2007, 50 years after the International Geophysical Year. The telling contrast between the names of the two programs - first "Geophysical" then "Heliophysical" - reveals an enormous increase over half a century in the scope of scientific research stemming from human interest in the physical environment of Earth. But the full pedigree of the IHY as recorded in the sequence of all international programs leading to it, starting one and a half centuries ago, is more prognostic. These record a progression of emerging innovations and program objectives that define IHY's inherited role in furthering the progression. The series of programs of which IHY is the latest is bringing into existence a science that discovers and applies the laws that govern magnetized plasmas in space interacting with gravitating bodies. As this talk will explain, categories that characterize such a science have become known and methods for uncovering the underlying laws and applying them will form the trademark of the IHY.
