NASA's Deep Impact mission successfully executed an impact experiment on the surface of the comet 9P/Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005. The fly-by spacecraft included two visible color imagers (medium- and high-resolution; MRI and HRI) and a 1 to 5 micron near-infrared (IR) spectrometer. The nucleus was observed prior to impact and the ejecta were monitored for 15 mins. after impact and then later again during look-back observations 45 minutes after impact. Water ice was detected and mapped in all three phases of observations. We present the identification, spatial distribution, and particle size of water ice and trace its path during impact and in relation to the comet's structure and discuss it's implications.
