H-alpha filtergrams of two active regions close to the solar limb were used to study Ellerman bomb morphological and evolutionary features, in order to arrive at a quantitative determination of the elongated (or spike-like) shape of the bomb. It is found that the mean apparent length for 174 bombs is 1.1 arcsec, while 80% of 204 bombs have a diameter of less than 0.6 arcsec. The mean life of 77 bombs was found to be about 12 min at H-alpha 1.2 A. The first brightness maximum of a typical bomb is on average reached in approximately 2 min. The length of bombs increases in the first brightening phase, and it is suggested that their mean upward velocity explains the blue asymmetry of moustache H-alpha emission profiles.
