Photoelectric measurements of the line profile of the solar 5576.097 A line, together with determinations of the wavelength shift of its center, are reported. The behavior of the line asymmetry, or C-shape, and the wavelength shift of the line center, are investigated by measurements taken at various limb distances and along four different diameters of the sun. An accuracy of about 0.8 mA rms is achieved in determining the solar line center relative to calibrating I2 absorption tube lines, and of 0.3-1.0 mA rms for the relative variations of the C-shape. Analysis indicates a strong latitude dependence for the C-shape, which may account for the 'ears' observed by Howard et al. (1980) by means of Doppler compensation method integration of the line asymmetry from the line wings to the core.
