A method is proposed for obtaining diffraction-limited pictures of extended astronomical objects irrespective of wavefront distortions arising from atmospheric turbulence. The method does not require any prior knowledge of the brightness distribution across the object. Nor is the presence of reference details necessary. The way in which the two required images can be recorded is described. With a secondary lens and a semitransparent mirror, two identical copies of the wave entering the telescope are obtained. By placing filters in the planes of the images of the telescope aperture, the two different pupil functions are simulated. The images of the object formed after the filters are the ones needed for the reconstruction. The method proposed here can also be used with simpler pupil functions.
