The evidence for an intense internal solar magnetic field provided by observations of the power spectrum of 5-min solar oscillations is examined. The effects of rotation and magnetic fields on the oscillation models of a spherically symmetric sun are considered. It is shown that although the observed splitting in the major peaks of the power spectrum of the low-degree oscillations may be rationalized by the presence of an intense magnetic core, this interpretation is not without difficulties, and it seems likely that the solar magnetic field is not strong enough to produce the required splitting by itself.
